At a two-day regional meeting in Brasília ahead of COP30, Benito Wheatley, Special Envoy of the British Virgin Islands, stressed that Caribbean and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) must secure a fair outcome at the upcoming climate talks in Belém, Brazil.
He emphasized that while the Caribbean contributes minimally to global CO₂ emissions, it bears disproportionately severe climate impacts—hurricanes, sea-level rise, and extreme weather. Wheatley warned that if temperatures continue to exceed 1.5 °C, parts of the region may become uninhabitable. He called on Latin American and Caribbean nations to back Brazil’s presidency to ensure climate justice for vulnerable island states.
